About Us
Today we hear about many problems, but none so heartrending as the plight of homeless children. Frequently abused, scarred emotionally and unable to help themselves, they are often separated from brothers and sisters and passed from one agency to another in attempts to meet their needs. In San Diego alone, there are 7,500 children who are either homeless or in the overworked foster care system. It’s a problem that affects every one of us.
In 1992 Father Joe’s Villages developed an urban oasis for teens who, for one reason or another, cannot live at home. At today’s Toussaint Academy of the Arts and Sciences, 30 teens live and attend high school on site, work part time, and volunteer in the community. One hundred percent of them go on to college or successful employment.
Now Father Joe’s Villages is poised to continue this proven record of success by establishing a larger Village of hope for homeless and foster children. Set in rural eastern San Diego County, “A Children’s Village” will serve homeless and foster children by nurturing each child’s intellectual, physical, emotional and spiritual needs. “A Children’s Village” will enable siblings to live together and reunify families when possible in order to strengthen families and allow children to build important lifelong relationships with relatives. All children in this new Village will live with trained house parents who will teach them responsibility and values, keep them out of harm’s way and help them become productive members of society.
